According to research by Harvard professor Howard Shaffer there is no infouence on gambling addiction with an increase of gambling sites. This means that legalisation of online gambling won't cause more gambling addiction cases.

Many governments want to ban online gambling because they believe that it will bring more gambling addiction in the country. Now that research showed that this is not true it's time for the government to make online gambling available for the public and control it in a good way.

The research showed that there was a big increase in new online gambling sites in the last years but the number of gambling addiction stayed the same. About 5% of the US citizens are gambling addicted. That's very low comparing with the 25% smoking addiction and 30% drugs addiction. The research also shows that banning online gambling is not good because many gambling addicted people will find another addiction like drugs or alcohol.

The research is called 'Disordered Gambling: Etiology, Trajectory, and Clinical Considerations' and was investigated by professor Howard Shaffer and co-author Ryan Martin. Howard Shaffer is an associate professor at the Harvard University and is specialised in gambling and addiction.
